episode #15 Alev Lenz
Alev Lenz is helping this podcast into the next decade. She is an extremely talented composer, singer, songwriter, producer, a builder of worlds! Song and storytelling are at the heart of her work.
We start our conversation at Black Mirror, a good place to start i’d say. Alev was commissioned to write a track for the end titles of a Black Mirror season finale, this track was ‘Fall Into Me’ and it was somewhat of a turning point in her career. This track helped Alev connect with the pioneering vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth and therefore shaped her latest album ‘3’ where Roomful of Teeth were featured heavily and in many a cappella songs. It’s powerful album and you’ll be hearing all about it.
But there’s more! ‘3’ was released on SA Records the newly founded label arm of the innovative sample library company, Spitfire Audio (loved by composers and musicians all over the world for their composition tools}. As part of the albums release Alev worked with Spitfire to create a bespoke sample library that captures the essence of the album - it’s an innovative idea and it’s also the instrument we use to write our track together.

Another 2019 project for Alev was her collaboration with the one and only Anoushka Shankar on her latest and beautifully truthful release.
Each episode, each guest brings with it new music. We write a new track together but following three rules
we only have an afternoon to make our track
we can’t pre plan anything
we can only use one instrument but electronic manipulations of it are allowed (encouraged!)
THIS episode has a twist, a grey area, maybe a slight bending of the rules… or something. Our ‘instrument’ is a sample library, specifically Alev’s sample library built by Alev and Spitfire Audio from the DNA of her album 3. We leap between various patches in the library to create our track.
If you’re a composer or musician I’d highly recommend getting yourself a copy of Alev’s sample library from Spitfire Audio. Even better get the album and sample library bundle.
It’s very affordable at £29, very little money for a lot of inspiration.
