episode #10 Derwin Dicker
aka Gold Panda
excuse the mess resumes usual business after three ‘extra mess’ episodes. The MUSIC MAKING is back. If you’re new to this podcast here’s the deal…
In each episode I spend a day with a different music maker. We chat about their process and then in the afternoon we make a track together using only one instrument, you can hear the whole process unfold in the Part B of each episode.
I’m elated to be bringing you this episode with one of my all time favourite electronic artists. When I first discovered electronic music his album Lucky Shiner was one of the things I was heavily listening to, an important album for me and for many others I’m sure. This episode is also the first of series two, very glad to be back and thanks for being here.
Gold Panda is Derwin’s most widely known artist alias but you should also check out
DJ Jenifa and Selling an electronic duo with collaborator Jas Shaw, one half of Simian Mobile Disco.
You’re invited to join us on a stroll to a nearby vinyl shop. We’re buying some records to take back to Derwin’s studio and sample. It’s our ‘instrument’ and they’re all we can use.
There’s plenty of great insights into many of the above projects throughout the #10A episode and you’ll be hearing plenty of juicy excerpts. We discuss the musical foundations of Gold Panda and how he’s an avid user of MaxMSP nowadays. He also has a few things to say about streaming services! There is also a brilliant new project on the horizon which had an early outing live in Paris (see below), a collaboration with internationally renowned sitarist, Anoushka Shankar.
Finally, for the hard core Gold Panda fans, there IS a new album on the horizon I’m sure you’re happy to hear. We touch upon that delightful topic towards the end.

Don’t forget to check out the music making part. It’s a bit of a masterclass in a classic Gold Panda music making process. Derwin really got into a flow, it was exciting to witness and you can too.
We had a lot of fun battling against a lot of the music in these records.
Thanks for checking out excuse the mess - tell some people about it!
